The Ten Biggest Sports Teams

Now, when I say biggest I don’t mean most players or most money or anything like that. The teams on this list are chosen based on historical importance, overall success, reputation, and popularity in terms of the size and passion of their fan base.

10. Green Bay Packers

The Packers have a unique claim on NFL history as the first team to win the Superbowl. Their Lombardi-era heritage has provided a solid foundation to build one of the most popular team in the NFL. Packer fans, or ‘cheeseheads” are some of the most passionate sports fans out there, so much so that they are able to sustain such a successful team from middle-of-nowhere Wisconsin.

9. Los Angeles Lakers

Perhaps the most popular team in the NBA, the Lakers continue to show their dominance time and time again. They have the most wins, the highest winning percentage, and the longest winning streak as well as 17 NBA championships. They are also massively popular; to be seen at a Lakers game is almost a symbol of status. They are the powerhouse team of basketball.

8. Real Madrid

One of the biggest soccer clubs in the world, Real Madrid has a habit of collecting some of the biggest soccer superstars, which only increases their notoriety. FIFA even named Real Madrid as the most successful club of the century. The team has a 108 year history and is one of the most dominant teams on the world stage.

7. Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are one of those teams who has a huge following of very loyal and passionate fans. They are a very historic team and are also involved in what is probably the biggest rivalry in all of sports. Sure they went 86 years before finally winning the series again in 2004, but that dry spell itself has become legendary, which also had a part to play because of their involvement in one of the biggest trades of all time when they sent Babe Ruth to those dreaded Yankees. Boston fans both today and yesterday have made the Sox one of the biggest sports teams in the world.

6. Brazil National Football Team

The biggest sporting event in the world in the World Cup of Soccer. And at every tournament, Brazil is constantly a force to be reckoned with. They have won the tournament 5 times and are often contenders right up until the end. From their golden era with Pele, the most famous soccer player there has been, to more recent players such as Ronaldo, Brazil has never lacked star power. Soccer is a proud tradition in South America, and Brazil most of all.

5. Dallas Cowboys

Not many people take sports as seriously as people in Texas take football. That is why the Dallas Cowboys are the biggest team in the NFL. They are five-time Superbowl champs and are often strong contenders year in and year out. They are also one of the wealthiest sports teams there is. The Cowboys are an institution in Texas. Heck, even their cheerleaders are legendary.

4. Montreal Canadiens

Far and away the biggest team in hockey. Their 100 year history is rich as one of the four founding members of the NHL, one of the members of the illustrious “original six”, and the winners of the most ever Stanley Cups at 24. They are ingrained into Canadian culture and their rivalry with the Toronto Maple Leafs is one of the biggest rivalries in all of sports. Hockey fans everywhere are passionate about loving them or passionate about hating them.

3. New Zealand All Blacks

When you think of teams which completely dominate their sport, you should be thinking of the All Blacks. These New Zealanders are monsters in the world of rugby. Their stats, such as their 75% win ration and the fact that only 5 of the 20 top teams in the world have defeated them, are enough to look at, but the team is legendary beyond simple numbers. With traditions like the Ka Mate performance used to strike fear into their opponents and superstars like Jonah Lomu, the All Blacks are one of the biggest and most imposing sports teams in the world.

2. Manchester United

Man U is by far the most infamous soccer team in the world. Their name is known far and wide and their following is great. The team is exceedingly profitable and has passionate supporters all over England and the world. The best and most popular footballers seem to gravitate towards Manchester, from David Beckham to Michael Owen to Wayne Rooney. They are one of those unique forces to be reckoned with in the sports world and the second biggest sports franchise there is.

1. New York Yankees

I know most people are going to hate this choice, considering many see the Yankees as the evil empire of sports. But its hard to deny their success, their following and their history. Their success comes from their 27 world series titles and their trend of consistently being the “team to beat” each and every year. Many will claim that this is simply because they have more money to spend on their team than anyone else, which is probably true. But this is the way it is.
New York has a rich and full history and can claim many of the greatest ball players who have ever lived to be among their rosters including Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and of course the Babe himself. They are a team that their fans love to love and all others love to hate.

  4. It terms of revenue and finance American clubs tend to hold their own but in terms of global popularity American sports clubs can’t even hold a candle to a large number of European football clubs such as Manchester united, real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool etc etc. Their superior popularity is ten-fold… With the one exception of NY Yankees.

E.g 99%+ of Europeans would struggle to name any other American sports team
