Repo Men

Oh 2010, why have you been giving me such poor movies?

Repo Men is set in a futuristic world where a company provides people with fully functional artificial body parts, but if you don’t keep up with the payments they send out repo men who cut you up and take the body parts back. Normally I like futuristic movies which have a catch like this, though I’m not sure that organ repossession is enough of a catch, as opposed to something like women not being able to give birth in Children of Men or the influence of humanoid robots in AI.

But regardless, this movie still could have worked had it had some decent directing and editing, both of which were horrendous. The story starts off coherent, but drifts off the rails and turns into a jumbled mess. We suddenly have a new female character thrown at us who is inserted into the plot with no rhyme or reason.

There’s no flow to this movie. Scenes just happen and then we have to try to figure out how they connect to the scene before (i.e. the son and wife at the train station. What was the purpose of that??). There’s no consistent tone or pace. There’s even a scene near the end where Jude Law and the aforementioned girl who came out of nowhere find themselves in a fight scene straight out of Kill Bill. And to top it all off, they give us an ending which is the equivalent of giving the finger to the audience.

  1. Nice review. Cool blog.

Thanks for your comment on my blog. John Leguizamo had a small role as the guy who I think was taking organs from people, he was in that run down part of the city, it was a small role though.
