Short Reviews of Movies, Board Games, and Other Stuff

Cloverfield

Well, I am all caught up on the movies I have seen so far this year.  So I thought I would take a look back at the movies I saw last year and post up some of those reviews.  The first movie for my look back is one of the first to come out in 2008, Cloverfield.

I really liked this movie. I went in skeptical because of all the hype surrounding it, but it really pulled me in. It was just… awesome. The Blair Witch project with a budget, however with this movie you actually care about the characters. Their personalities and relationships are introduced through a party at the beginning which works really well. I got so involved with what was going on I forgot it was a monster movie for a while until the first big blackout.

This was a very effective way to tell the story, from the viewpoint of the innocent bystanders. Seeing what was happening in bits and pieces gave everything a sense of realism and a strange sort of excitement. And because we do grow to care for the characters, extra weight is added to very tiny moments such as when Rob answers the phone “hi mom.” This movie captivated me from beginning to end. Awesome.

9/10
