We Bought A Zoo

I’m going to keep this one short.  We Bought a Zoo is a sweet and enjoyable movie.  In fact, its very enjoyable.  Yes, its about a family who buys a zoo, but really its about a family coping with the loss of their mom.  Its the emotional core of the movie, and though it does lead to some TV sitcom ‘very special episode’  level scenes, its pretty heartfelt  regardless.

And hey, it has animals!  Who doesn’t want to fantasize about what it would be like to live in your own zoo?  And here’s a movie that can play up that fantasy.  Its pretty cool to see.  And a couple of the animals even become full out characters in the movie, notably Spar the tiger and Buster the bear.

Its melodrama, but its good melodrama.  It has a friendly, risk-free tone and that’s okay every now and then.  Its one of those movies that you will probably forget about in a year or two, but will still provide for some high quality viewing while your watching it with a bowl of popcorn in your lap.  I recommend it.

8/10

  1. Glad you enjoyed it. I did too!

  2. Ahah, the animals are the main draw for me, more so than the cast. I might rent it on a slow night.

  3. I thought the little girl who played the daughter was a scene-stealer – what a cutie. Wasn’t my fave performance for Scarlett Johanssen or Matt Damon but they did a good job nonetheless.
